State of the States – August 2021

Aug 24, 2021

Is it really getting worse everywhere?

The above map shows the worst wildfire year for each state according to the number of wildfires.

If wildfire were getting worse everywhere, the entire map would be dark green; if it were getting better, the full map would be light green.

Of the 5 worst states according to both size and frequency, 4 are predominantly national forests.

State (USFS%)
California (57%)
Colorado (73%)
Maine* (1%)
Utah (77%)
Wyoming (83%)

*Maine’s 2020 wildfire result was driven primarily by the state having five times as many campfire-related, and twice as many debris-burning, accidents as the historical averages.
